We're Thankful For A Lot This Season

This Thanksgiving may be different from past years, but that doesn't mean there aren't many things for which to be thankful.

Our Chief Strategy Officer Tony Clifford, for example, explains the five actions he's thankful President-Elect Joe Biden will have the opportunity to take once he's sworn in on January 20. President and CEO Scott Wiater discusses the challenges of finance and interconnection across multiple states. And finally, we were thankful for the chance to help students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) attend the MDV-SEIA virtual conference last month by way of two scholarships we were proud to sponsor.

Creating Opportunities In The Solar Industry for HBCU Students and Graduates

As part of this year’s MD-DC-VA Solar Energy Industries Association’s Solar Focus 2020 conference, we were pleased to sponsor two scholarships for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to attend the conference. We’re committed to expanding diversity in the solar field, and these scholarships gave students access to all of the panels, unlimited master classes and 1:1 virtual mentorship with members of our team.

A Bright Future for a Former Landfill

The West Riverside Landfill in Jurupa Valley, CA closed in 1983, but a 3.094 megawatt solar project has transformed the landfill site. The project—financed, owned and operated by Standard Solar—is expected to generate 12,179,760 kilowatt hours of energy, enough to offset the greenhouse gas emissions from 1,829 passenger vehicles driven for one year and the CO₂ emissions from 1,502 homes’ electricity use for one year. 

The landfill system will sell its electricity to Southern California Edison who will in turn issue bill credits to the power bills for 29 power meters of schools and buildings in the Lake Elsinore Unified School District that are not suitable candidates for on-site solar.
